A pair of glasses resting on a book, meant to represent the action of editing and proofreading.

It never hurts to have a second set of eyes on your writing, and when you write for a living, you soon discover that editorial services aren’t just a worst-case scenario – even the very best pieces of writing can be improved. As an editor, my job is to help your work become the best it can possibly be. I polish the rough edges until they shine.

If you’ve looked for editorial services before, you’ll know that there’s some confusion in the industry about what exactly ‘editorial services’ entails. Some editors will check your whole manuscript against the Chicago Manual of Style and checklist the very basic mechanical errors that all authors make. Others will go through your work and cross out every adjective. Some editors will look at the whole of your story and make sweeping decisions about plot and characters. I offer all three of these services, and many more.

Line Editing/ProofreadingCopyeditingDevelopmental EditingSensitivity Reading Service
This style of editing is purely mechanical. I look at your work, line by line, and spot the obvious mistakes you might have missed. If you’ve ever dropped an apostrophe, used ‘affect’ when you mean ‘effect’, or misspelt ‘floccinaucinihilipilification’, then you understand the importance of proofreading. Proofreading can prevent the simple mistakes that will stop your writing from reaching its full potential. My proofreading services adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style, which is the industry standard style for both fiction and non-fiction writing. For my proofreading and line editing services, I charge £20 per hour.
Copyediting is a little more in-depth than Proofreading and Line Editing. Instead of only considering the mechanical faults in your writing, copyediting tells you the ways in which your writing could be improved at sentence level. As part of this service I would remove unnecessary words and phrases, such as adjectives, and reformulate sentences to increase reader engagement with the text. I particularly recommend this service for businesses and bloggers. In the web content industry, readability is a fundamental step to ensuring that your site attracts long term, engaged fans and customers. A well edited, engaging piece of writing will help your content stand out. For my copyediting services, I charge £25 per hour.
Developmental Editing, sometimes known as Substantitive Editing, is a service especially for writers of fiction and long-form non-fiction. Whereas my other editorial services examine your writing under a microscope, Developmental Editing looks at the bigger picture. Maybe you’re not sure where your story is going, or how you’re going to introduce a particular plot point. Is your villain lacking motivation? Is your protagonist too wishy-washy? These are the big-picture problems I can help you find solutions for. The charges for Developmental Editing will depend on the amount of development required. As a general rule, I work for £20-25 per hour. My preferred genres are Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Mystery, and Horror. I will also edit non-fiction and literary fiction.
You might also have heard about sensitivity readings. This is a term coined by writeinthemargins.org, used to denote a situation where a writer has created a marginalised character, but is unsure whether their representation of the character will be accepted by the members of that marginalised group. I offer sensitivity reading services alongside my developmental editing services. I am a member of the LGBT community, partially sighted, and I suffer from depression and chronic illness. If your writing deals with these themes, it might be a good idea for me to read over your work and suggest ways in which these themes can be addressed properly and in a productive manner. Of course, if you have basic questions about what it’s like to be a part of these marginalised groups, you can always contact me here or on twitter, and I’ll answer as soon as I can.
